15/05/25, 11:00

King's College London has opened applications for the 2025/26 Raheem Sterling Scholarship, offering financial support to Black and Black-mixed heritage students from Greater London. This initiative, funded by the Raheem Sterling Foundation, represents a significant investment in breaking down barriers to higher education and promoting equal access for underrepresented communities.

The scholarship provides substantial financial assistance with an annual package worth £16,535, comprising a full tuition fee waiver of £9,535 and a £7,000 cash stipend for living expenses. This generous support extends for up to three years, covering the complete duration of an undergraduate degree program.

Who Can Apply

Applicants must meet several key criteria to be eligible for the scholarship.. Candidates need to have firmly accepted an offer for a full-time undergraduate degree at King's College London beginning in September 2025. They must be classified as a 'home' student for fee purposes. Importantly, applicants must identify as belonging to specific ethnic groups, including Black or Black British (Caribbean or African), Mixed White and Black Caribbean, Mixed White and Black African, or other Black background categories.

Geographic eligibility requires applicants to have a home postcode within the Greater London area as listed on their UCAS application, reflecting the scholarship's commitment to supporting local communities.

While meeting the basic eligibility criteria is essential, the selection process gives particular preference to certain applicants. Students residing in the London Borough of Brent receive priority consideration, as do those from households with annual incomes of £43,000 or less, with particular emphasis on supporting those with the lowest incomes.

It also prioritises applicants who attended lower-performing schools for their GCSEs, as measured by Progress 8 indicators, recognising the additional challenges these students may have faced. Students from priority groups, including care-experienced individuals, estranged students, forced migrants, and young carers, are given special consideration, as are those eligible for contextual admissions at King's College London.

The Raheem Sterling Foundation, established by the professional footballer, demonstrates a clear commitment to supporting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Through initiatives like this scholarship program, the foundation actively works to foster social mobility and create pathways for personal and professional growth within underserved communities.
